Setting the Right GST Codes Before Publishing from Dext

This is part of our Publishing to Your Accounting Software series (Chapter 4 of the Dext tutorial hub):

  • Lesson 1: Connecting Dext to Xero
  • Lesson 2: Connecting Dext to QuickBooks Online
  • Lesson 3: Connecting Dext to MYOB
  • Lesson 4: Reviewing and Publishing Documents Safely in Dext
  • Lesson 5: Setting the Right GST Codes Before Publishing from Dext

An incorrect tax code at the Dext stage flows straight through to your accounting software and your BAS, so it is worth getting right at the source.

1. Understanding your default tax code

Dext usually applies a default tax code, which you can adjust for documents that are GST-free or treated differently.

2. Knowing your common GST-free items

Certain expenses are GST-free by law, so it is worth knowing which of your regular suppliers or purchases fall into this category.

3. Keeping coding consistent

The same type of expense should always get the same tax code, which supplier rules help enforce automatically.

4. Reviewing your coding periodically

A periodic check of your published documents against your BAS figures helps catch a systemic coding error early.

Dext’s Help Centre covers tax code setup: help.dext.com. Our registered BAS agents can review your GST coding as part of BAS preparation.
