What Does Remote Bookkeeping Actually Involve?
“Remote” simply means we work from our own office rather than yours — everything runs through cloud accounting software like Xero or QuickBooks, so there’s no need for us to be physically in your building. In practice, that usually looks like:
- Your bank feeds connect directly into your accounting software, so transactions come through automatically
- We reconcile, code, and manage your books on a schedule that suits your business — weekly, fortnightly, or monthly
- You can check in anytime through the same software, or we send regular reports so you always know where things stand
- Questions get answered by phone, email, or a quick call — not by waiting for someone to be in the office
Is Remote Bookkeeping Secure?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and a fair one to ask when handing over financial access. Cloud accounting platforms use bank-level encryption, and we only ever access what’s needed to do the job — read and write access to your accounting file, not your actual bank accounts. As Registered BAS Agents, we’re also bound by strict confidentiality obligations under the Tax Practitioners Board’s Code of Professional Conduct.
Remote Bookkeeping vs. Hiring In-House
Bringing on a full-time bookkeeper means a salary, superannuation, leave entitlements, and training — whether or not there’s a full-time’s worth of bookkeeping work to do. Remote bookkeeping scales with what you actually need:
- Pay for what you use — a few hours a month for a small business, more as you grow, without carrying a full-time cost
- No single point of failure — if one team member is on leave, the work doesn’t stop
- Built-in expertise — you get a Registered BAS Agent’s compliance knowledge, not just data entry
- Seen it before. Our bookkeepers work across dozens of industries — trades, childcare, retail, hospitality, and professional services. Whatever is going on in your books, we’ve likely already fixed it for someone else. An in-house bookkeeper only knows one business: yours.
We meet online through Microsoft Teams or Zoom — whatever suits you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is remote bookkeeping different from having a bookkeeper in my office?
The work itself is the same — reconciliations, BAS, payroll, reporting — the only difference is where it happens. Cloud software means physical location doesn’t affect how well the books are kept.
How often will I hear from my bookkeeper?
That’s up to you. Some clients want a quick monthly summary, others prefer more regular check-ins, especially around BAS time. We set the cadence around what actually helps you.
Can you take over from a bookkeeper I’m not happy with?
Yes — this is one of our most common transitions. We review your existing file, tidy up any errors or gaps, and take it over from there. See our Rescue Bookkeeping service if your books have fallen behind.
Do I still need an accountant if I use remote bookkeeping?
Usually yes, for a different purpose. We handle the ongoing day-to-day recording and BAS lodgement; your accountant typically handles tax planning and annual returns. We’re happy to liaise directly with them.
