Choosing the Right QuickBooks Online Plan

This is part of our Getting Started with QuickBooks Online series (Chapter 1 of the QuickBooks tutorial hub):

  • Lesson 1: Choosing the Right QuickBooks Online Plan
  • Lesson 2: Setting Up Your QuickBooks Company File
  • Lesson 3: Building Your Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks
  • Lesson 4: Navigating the QuickBooks Dashboard and Mobile App
  • Lesson 5: Adding Customers and Products in QuickBooks

QuickBooks Online offers a few different plans, and the right one usually comes down to how many users and how much detail you need in your reporting.

1. Simple Start

The entry plan, suited to a sole trader or very small business, though it only includes a single user.

2. Essentials

Adds more users and bill management, a reasonable step up once you have a small team.

3. Plus

Adds project tracking and more users again, useful if you want to see profitability by job.

4. Matching the plan to your needs

If job costing matters to you, Plus is usually worth the extra cost. If you are a true sole operator, Simple Start may be all you need.

QuickBooks Australia’s official YouTube channel has a Getting Started playlist comparing plans: youtube.com/@QuickBooksAU. Our registered BAS agents can help you weigh up which plan actually fits.
