Setting Up Your QuickBooks Company File

This is part of our Getting Started with QuickBooks Online series (Chapter 1 of the QuickBooks tutorial hub):

  • Lesson 1: Choosing the Right QuickBooks Online Plan
  • Lesson 2: Setting Up Your QuickBooks Company File
  • Lesson 3: Building Your Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks
  • Lesson 4: Navigating the QuickBooks Dashboard and Mobile App
  • Lesson 5: Adding Customers and Products in QuickBooks

Getting your company file set up correctly from day one saves cleanup work later.

1. Enter your business details

Add your business name, ABN and address, which flows through to your invoices and reports.

2. Confirm GST registration

Set your GST registration status and reporting frequency to match what you have registered with the ATO.

3. Set your financial year

Most Australian businesses run 1 July to 30 June, so confirm this is correct before entering transactions.

4. Inviting your accountant or BAS agent

QuickBooks lets you invite your accountant or BAS agent to your file, giving them direct access without sharing your login.

QuickBooks Australia’s YouTube channel has a full setup walkthrough: see the official Getting Started playlist. Our registered BAS agents can review your setup before you start entering real transactions.
