Preparing Your Activity Statement in Xero

This is part of our GST, BAS and Compliance Reporting series (Chapter 6 of the Xero tutorial hub):

  • Lesson 1: How Xero Tracks GST on Every Transaction
  • Lesson 2: Preparing Your Activity Statement in Xero
  • Lesson 3: Lodging Your BAS Directly from Xero
  • Lesson 4: Setting Up and Lodging TPAR in Xero

Xero builds most of your Activity Statement automatically from how you have coded transactions through the period.

1. Finding your Activity Statement

Under Reports, look for the Activity Statement, which pulls figures based on your GST reporting settings.

2. Review every figure, not just the total

Check the individual GST on sales, GST on purchases, and PAYG withholding figures, not just the final amount owing.

3. Make sure everything is reconciled first

An Activity Statement built from unreconciled data will be wrong, so complete your bank reconciliation before finalising it.

4. Lock the period once lodged

Once lodged, locking the period in Xero prevents accidental changes to transactions that have already been reported.

Xero’s official YouTube channel covers preparing your Activity Statement: watch the official Xero tutorial. Our registered BAS agents can review and lodge this for you each period.
