Categorising and Reconciling Transactions in QuickBooks

This is part of our Banking, Receipts and Reconciliation series (Chapter 3 of the QuickBooks tutorial hub):

  • Lesson 1: Connecting Your Bank Feed to QuickBooks
  • Lesson 2: Categorising and Reconciling Transactions in QuickBooks
  • Lesson 3: Using Receipt Snap in QuickBooks to Capture Receipts
  • Lesson 4: Emailing Receipts and Bills into QuickBooks

Reconciling regularly keeps your books accurate and BAS time far less stressful.

1. Reviewing incoming transactions

Each bank transaction appears in a queue ready to be categorised or matched.

2. Matching or categorising

QuickBooks often suggests a category based on past transactions, which you confirm or adjust.

3. Doing it weekly, not just at BAS time

Reconciling a little each week is far less overwhelming than facing months of transactions at once.

4. Investigating anything that does not match

If your QuickBooks balance does not match your bank statement, it is worth tracking down why rather than ignoring a small gap.

QuickBooks Australia’s YouTube channel covers reconciliation: watch the official QuickBooks Australia tutorial. If reconciliation has piled up, our rescue bookkeeping service can help you catch up.
