How to Compare Bookkeeping Services

Bookkeeping proposals can look similar until you compare the work behind the price. One provider may include monthly reconciliations and reports; another may charge separately for payroll, overdue records or BAS preparation. Compare the scope and the handover process, not just the monthly fee.

Compare the actual deliverables

Ask each provider to describe what will be completed, how often, and what you will receive. Check whether the proposal covers bank and card reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, BAS preparation, and management reports. Only compare items that matter to your business.

Clarify timing and responsibilities

Find out when the records will be brought up to date, when reports arrive, and what information you must provide. Ask who follows up missing invoices or approvals and who is responsible for reviewing payroll changes. If the answer is vague, it will be difficult to tell whether the service is on track.

Look at continuity and communication

Ask who will do the work, who covers it when they are away, and how you raise an urgent issue. Make sure you will retain access to your accounting records and understand how the provider will work with your accountant.

Understand the price

Ask what is included in the quoted fee, what is billed separately and how the fee changes if transaction volumes or staff numbers grow. A cheaper quote may suit a simple business; it may cost more overall if essential work is excluded. Request a written scope so you can compare like with like.
