Anyone can call themselves a bookkeeper. There’s no licence required, no register to check, nothing stopping someone from putting it on a business card tomorrow. But the moment someone starts preparing or lodging your BAS for a fee, that’s a different story entirely, and it’s worth asking the right question before you hand it over, so a cheap mistake doesn’t turn into your problem down the track.

The question is simple: are you a Registered BAS Agent? Preparing or lodging a BAS for a fee, or advising on GST and PAYG, is regulated work under Australian law. Only someone registered with the Tax Practitioners Board is legally allowed to do it. If the answer is no, or you get a vague answer, that’s worth pausing on.
Why this actually matters to you, not just to them. If your BAS is prepared by someone who isn’t registered, you’re the one carrying the risk if something goes wrong, not them. Getting this wrong doesn’t land on the bookkeeper’s shoulders, it lands on yours, usually at the worst possible time, right when you should be enjoying a weekend off, not sorting out a letter from the ATO.
What registration actually involves. Becoming a Registered BAS Agent isn’t a quick form, it requires a Certificate IV in Accounting or Bookkeeping, a minimum number of hours of relevant experience, ongoing training, and professional indemnity insurance. Agents also have to follow a formal code of conduct covering honesty and competence. It’s a genuine bar to clear, not a title someone picks up casually.
You can actually check. The Tax Practitioners Board keeps a public register, so rather than taking anyone’s word for it, you can look up whether the person or business you’re considering is genuinely registered before you commit.
This isn’t about being suspicious of every bookkeeper you meet. Plenty of excellent bookkeepers handle day-to-day records without touching your BAS at all, and that’s a completely legitimate way to work, whether you’re a one-person operation or you’ve got a small team behind you. The point is simply knowing which category the person handling your BAS actually falls into, before there’s a problem to sort out on a Saturday instead of relaxing with the family.
Every BAS Agent on our team is properly registered, so you’re covered from day one, and you can hand it over knowing it’s genuinely being looked after. Get in touch if you’d like that checked or handled properly.
We'll only use it to follow up on your feedback \u2014 never for anything else.
